Na Li defeats Maria Sharapova

Li Na returned to her winning ways ending Maria Sharapova’s quest for the year-end No.1 ranking, defeating the ailing Russian in a tight two-setter 76(4) 64.

Having been defeated in all her matches since US Open, the Chinese first-ranked player game was back at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, showing strong display of one of the most powerful opponents, Maria Sharapova. She went from being down 2-4 to equal the set and get it to a a tie-break, where she once again showed her competitive spirit, winning the first set from 0-4. In the second set, Li managed to held off resurgent Sharapova, stopping her run from 2-5 to 4-5 and 40-30 before finally clinching the victory.

“I really wasn’t thinking about too much during the match,” Li said after the win. “I knew I had to fight to come back, since the match is never finished until it’s finished. I’m so happy I was able to beat Maria because she’s a top player.”

Li had been facing problems with motivation and confidence after becoming Asia’s first Grand Slam Titlist at the Roland Garros, going 5-7 in her seven tournaments from June – but she had defeated Sharapova in their three last meetings in straight sets and secured the fourth-consecutive win over the second-ranked Sharapova.

Sharapova’s quest for finishing the year at No.1 is now over, as she has no chance to qualify to the semi-finals.
