Rafael Nadal sensationally ousted in Shanghai by Mayer

Rafael Nadal lost to Florian Mayer in Shanghai

Florian Mayer scored the biggest win of his career on Thursday, when he sensationally ousted World No. 2 Rafael Nadal 7-6(5), 6-3 to reach the Shanghai Rolex Masters quarter-finals. German No. 15 seed needed one hour and 48 minutes to send the Spanish superstar packing.

Nadal withstood pressure from Mayer, saving two set points at 4-5 and even led 4-2 in the tie-break, yet Mayer remained more than consistent on his serve to clinch the 64-minute first set, dropping only 7 points on serve.

Mayer broke Nadal’s serve in the seventh game of the second set and never looked back, advancing to the second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season so far.

“Rafa is such an amazing competitor on court,” stated Mayer. “It is definitely the biggest win in my career. I cannot believe I won right now. But I have to stay focused for the next match and rest of the week.”

Nadal was philosophical in defeat, as he always is, hailing his opponent’s play and serve.

“For me it is a very disappointing day. I think I was doing everything right, practicing well,” Nadal said. “I had a good result last week. It is a tough lose, and it was not my day. But I am going to train hard for the next tournament.”

Well, in my opinion, fall is the weakest part of the season for Rafa, and his loss to a tough opponent in hot form should not be another reason for concerns for Rafa-fans. Yet, despite his Roland Garros title, it’s been a nightmare for Nadal, with Djokovic being the source of major problems.
